SWYG

10 years ago, members of St. Wilfrids Grappenhall realised that they needed to form a youth group for their church. They rose to the challenge and formed SWYG. SWYG, or St. Wilfrid’s Youth Group if you want the whole title, is an organisation who aims to combine religion with fun. We meet once a month on a Friday from five o’clock to six o’clock and participate in a wide range of activities for 11 to 18 year olds.

We also support a Peruvian child and have done so for years. Our first child was called Sayda who thanks to our support is now going to university. We then helped to provide for a boy called Jose Manuel Borras. After one particularly good fundraising event we managed to make enough money to pay for an operation for his father, so he no longer needs financial support. Our current child is called Esther and we send money every month to help her and her family. To help raise money for our Peruvian children we run a stall at St. Wilfrid’s Christmas fair and also do many other fundraising activities.

The Youth Group is suspended at this time, July09.

If you would like more details about SWYG, their contact number is in the magazine

St Wilfrid’s Church Choir

The choir meets on Friday evenings at 6.30 for juniors and 7.00 pm for adults. Currently we have six juniors and about eighteen adults.  The full choir sings at the main Sunday morning service and a smaller number sing at the evening service.  Additionally, we sing at about a dozen or so weddings each year.

The choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). An exhibit in the choir vestry records the choir’s membership of the RSCM dating from 31st October 1957. So this year we will complete 50 years’ membership. The RSCM was set up just after the last war to help raise the standards of choral singing in parish churches. Our junior choristers have been working hard on the RSCM ‘Voice for Life’ training scheme to improve their singing and general musicianship.  Each autumn, the Cheshire diocese branch of the RSCM holds a festival service in Chester cathedral. In the preceding months we learn the music for this, both at our own choir practices and at workshops held across the diocese. This year the festival will hold a special interest for us as the six junior choristers who have passed the RSCM Bronze Award Examination will receive their medals from the Dean in Chester Cathedral.

As well as our singing, the choir provides a strong fellowship.  The first choir practice in September after the summer break is social occasion with a meal following the singing.  In January the annual choir dinner sees a party up to 40 strong including spouses visiting a local restaurant.

The choir is happy to welcome new members.

The bells at St Wilfrid's are of historical interest and the bells, the bell frame and the church tower are all in need of major repair.  The Bellringers have raised over £10,000 towards the cost of the works to the bells and bell frame.  The congregation has also been raising funds and we hope to commence work on the tower renovation shortly, sadly much more money is needed to complete the project.

Follow this link for more details of the the bells and their history.

Women's Group

St Wilfrid's Women's Group is a friendly group of ladies and has approximately 50 members in total, averaging about 35-40 at each meeting.  We meet on a Tuesday evening (usually the 1st and 3rd Tuesday in each month) in the Parish Centre at 8.00pm.

The programme commences in September and runs through until June.  We have a wide variety of interesting speakers, some serious and some humorous.  We usually have an annual theatre trip, an annual dinner in January and an outing towards the end of our year.  We hold 2 jumble sales a year, the proceeds of which go towards our funds which ultimately we pass on to the church.  We also sponsor a child in the Peru Children’s Trust.  For a small group we are happy that we can raise annually, approximately £1,000 for charity, ie our Church, our sponsored child and also donations which our speakers usually ask for in lieu of their charge.

New members are always made welcome.  Come along and give us a try!    Please contact me if you require any further information.
